Introduced in Queensland in 2009, the Youngcare At Home Care Grants assist young people (aged 18-65) with high care needs who are living at home and are at risk of entering aged care facilities.
In the 2012-13 financial year Youngcare distributed it's $1 millionth dollar through the At Home Care Grants program, providing support to 217 young people with 24/7 care needs and their families.
Full-time care is often expensive and places enormous emotional, physical and financial pressure on the family to provide care. By providing funding for equipment, home modifications, and emergency respite care, the Youngcare At Home Care Grants aim to enhance the standard of living for young people with disabilities and their carers to prevent further admissions of young people into aged care facilities.
The Grants provide one-off funding between $2,000 and $10,000, and are issued for the provision of essential support items such as hoists, wheelchairs, emergency respite care and renovations to make homes disability friendly.
In 2011, the Youngcare At Home Care Grants program was extended to New South Wales, thanks to the support of GIO Insurance, and in early 2013 moved into Victoria. This allows Youngcare to offer assistance to young people down the entire Eastern Seaboard of Australia.
Each round of Youngcare’s At Home Care Grants is drastically oversubscribed; there is simply not enough funding to provide assistance to every young person with unmet care needs. In the 2012-13 financial year alone there was an oversubscription of over $1,902,000, showing the urgency within the community for this essential funding.
Some examples of successful application items include:
• Water powered hydraulic lift
• In-home support
• Wheelchair ramp
• Air conditioning
• Power wheelchair and pressure cushion
• Electrical adjustable bed
• Motor vehicle wheelchair modification
Morgan and Emily are previous recipients of Youngcare At Home Care Grants and have seen their freedom and independence soar since receiving the funding.
The At Home Care Grants program is pivotal in keeping young Australians at home with their loved ones, and ultimately avoiding a future in aged care.
