When Youngcare supporter Amy Woodward competes in the Run Melbourne half marathon in August, it will be the plight of her uncle Barry and his family that pushes her along the way.
Only in his early 40’s and the father of two young children, Barry is suffering from early onset dementia.
Amy says it is utterly heartbreaking to firstly have to deal with the grief of having such a young family member “fall victim to this horrific fate,” but even harder to witness what she describes as “the seemingly relentless struggle to access support and care outside of a hospital room or an aged care facility.”
“There just aren't any appropriate options,” Amy said.
In a personal effort to make a difference in the lives of young people like Barry, Amy is aiming to raise $1000 for Youngcare in what will be her first ever half marathon.
“I absolutely support Youngcare’s vision, it is a cause that I feel does not garner as much attention in the public realm as it rightfully should,” she said.
The Youngcare team are so grateful to Amy for taking on this challenge and wish her the very best in her training and fundraising. To make a donation in support of Amy’s run, please visit http://runmelbourne.everydayhero.com.au/amy_woodward
