We’re almost finished on the new digs!

16 April 2015

For so many of us, living in a share house is where we make the transition into adulthood. Yes, there are a countless cooking disasters, late nights, and loads of laundry to bring home to mum and dad’s place – but that’s all part of being young, and growing up.

Youngcare Share House at Wooloowin bedroom

While we navigate this exciting chapter of our lives, thousands of young Aussies with high care needs are making a devastating transition that skips over this and so many other important life stages; with no choice but to move out of home and into an aged care facility.

We don’t think that’s fair, so we’re doing something about it. The Youngcare Share House at Wooloowin is proof there is an alternative for young Aussies with high care needs, and it’s being built as you read this. The four bedroom, architecturally designed share house will provide Youngcare residents with their own space, complete with en suite and kitchenette, as well as beautiful, light communal areas, and around-the-clock care.

The house is really starting to take shape, and you can see the home that it is going to become for four young Aussies with high care needs.

Waterproofing is done, and now it’s on to the painting and tiling. Cabinetry and automatic door work are taking place offsite, and will be installed in the next couple of weeks. We are currently sourcing in-kind donations of appliances and furniture. For a full list of what we need and how you can help CLICK HERE. This Youngcare Share House will be completed by the end of June and is a culmination of the support and hard work from our development partners, corporate supporters, and the community.

While we are pumped with the progress on this project, the best news is that four young people with high care needs will get to live with choice, independence and dignity. Last week they and their families all met for the first time – and really hit it off. It drives the cause home in a big way when you see what age appropriate accommodation means to a young person with high care needs who would otherwise face a future in aged care. The excitement is building as this project nears completion; your support is giving these people hope.

These four young people are looking forward to the next chapter of their lives, and all the fun and excitement of share house life. It’s a big deal because it means greater independence and the ability to make choices for themselves. For one resident it will mean getting to decorate her walls with art and posters, or playing whatever music she wants. For another it means having a spot for his car and going for a drive with a carer to visit his friends, AKA the ‘rat pack’.

So that’s where we’re at on the Youngcare Share House at Wooloowin. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on the progress and move in date for the four young Aussies whose lives are about to change forever.
