Volunteer Spotlight – Jacqui
Working in healthcare and dealing with people of all ages, I became aware of the important work Youngcare does in Queensland a number of years ago. I have met and treated a number of clients who have directly benefited from Youngcare’s accommodation solutions, at home grants and general support, but only in the last year or so did I decide to further my work with these people by volunteering with Youngcare. I will be forever grateful that I did.
I have thoroughly enjoyed every volunteering opportunity I have had with Youngcare, including a day raising money at the Races in Brisbane, Boot Scooting at the Gympie Music Muster and Gift Wrapping Christmas Goodies at Brookside Shopping Centre! The highlight of all of these events is always sharing your time and enthusiasm with other ‘vollies’, fellow volunteers who are as passionate about raising funds for Youngcare as you are! Every time I volunteer, I learn new ‘tips and tricks’, every vollie has something new to bring to the table.
Every time I volunteer, I am so proud of my fellow human beings and their generosity. Not once have I been negatively received and people are always so keen to learn about Youngcare, what they do and how they can help.
Youngcare is such an important part of life for young Aussies with high care needs, and the public are becoming more and more aware of that. A donation is often followed up by a story about ‘so and so had an accident when he was 20… he should live somewhere like these guys are talking about…’.
I am very proud to be associated with Youngcare, and hope to spend many more years raising money for such an amazing cause. I would encourage anyone reading this to find some time and slip on your red T-shirt; it’s the most amazing thing.
